Doing business to uplift the youth!

The action sports industry has become over saturated with beverage products containing way to much sugar, additives and artificial flavors. About 4 years ago I left my conventional energy drink contract early because I no longer saw myself aligned with the products. I wanted to promote and fuel my body with drinks and foods that has clean ingredients that I can pronounce the names of & that has lots of nutritional benefits. I searched for an alternative to the traditional "energy drinks" & found a company who are seeking to provide something different. Last year I got onboard with Purps, a organic beverage company founded by Kelly Slater, Pat Tenore and Dr Purps himself - all amazing leaders in the action sports community and beyond. They are not only providing an alternative to energy drinks, but also organic sports drinks and superfood travel packs to take on the road. I like to take the Purps Vita with me on the mountain, as it is small and easy to bring and gives me that "superboost" I am looking for when I'm training in the park. The company and it's team has a purpose to help uplift others, emphasizing on how they especially can inspire the youth. Through their program #purpsitforward they are using their position to help educate and inspire youth to adapt a healthier lifestyle. Their courageous leadership & dedication to giving back to the community inspires me to do the same. I am so proud to be a part of this family and to share their message on my platforms.

Check their website here to find out more about them and their great initiatives towards youth http://purps.com

Breakfast With Benefits

Breakfast bowls are so quick and easy to make and they can be made relatively cheap as you can mix and match with things you have at home. Here is a yummy, yummy, yuuuuuuummy breakfast bowl filled with good, nutritious ingredients that I love and eat before I hit the gym or slopes in the morning. l can guarantee that it will help kickstart your your day!!!

You don't need to use exactly these ingredients, let them be a guide to the overall experience but get creative with what's in your kitchen and cabinets :)

Recipe

Handful of Raw Cacao nibs / 2 tbs Raw cacao /  2 small organic, fair-trade bananas / Couple of Goji berries or other berries / Couple of Cashew nuts / 2 organic prunes/  1 tbs of Raw Green vegetable powder with chlorella / Couple of Sweet apricot kernels (can use almonds instead) / 2-3 leafs of Kale / Couple of drops of Peppermint oil / 1/2 tbs coconut sugar / Coconut shavings / 1/2 ts cinnamon /  1 cup of cold water / Blend everything in a high speed blender and pour in a bowl. Decorate with hemp seeds, granola, cacao nibs or what you may prefer. This recipe makes two servings. Serve chilled & enjoy!

Make sure to use RAW CACAO (naturally fermented) as cacao and processed chocolate bars are two different foods. Chocolate bars usually contain lots of processed sugars, additives and milk. Studies has shown that by adding dairy to the chocolate this actually blocks the absorption of antioxidants in chocolate. While processed chocolate may taste delicious, the benefits of cacao are only found in the raw form. Raw cacao can improve your memory, increase your bliss, reduce heart disease, shed fat, boost immunity, and create loads of energy! Read more on these blogs about the benefits to raw cacao and raw foods here

A season of "firsts"

Photo from Revelstoke in Canada by Matt Georges

Photo from Revelstoke in Canada by Matt Georges

I have some exciting news to share with you all as I’m so excited to announce that I am one of eight women who gets to compete on the Freeride World Tour this season. I want to challenge myself in a different element, outside of the park to take my snowboarding and experiences to the next level. To me snowboarding is all about exploring potential and creativity, something I belive this terrain will provide!

Thus I will challenge myself in some of the most difficult faces in the world this winter I am not letting go of the park just yet. I will also compete in the biggest slopestyle and big air events this season, like XGames in Oslo, European Open and the Nine Queens.

Here is a quote from my national team coach Per Iver Grimsrud about my plans for the season: «This is huge. Kjersti is a candidate to win X Games with her frontside 1080, and will at the same time be taking on the gnarliest freeride competitions in the world. This is unique. She handled the transition from halfpipe to slopestyle and now it will be interesting to see how she handles the transition to freeriding To compete in both the freestlye and freeride world tour simultaneously has to our knowledge, not been done before.»

I want to thank the Norwegian National Team and support system and the Norwegian Snowboard Federation for all the back up I have gotten though out my career. It's amazing that they believe so much in the riders uniqueness and gives us thumbs up when we want to do something that is maybe a bit "outside the box".

It has always been attracting to me to compete because I give it all when the pressure is on. This is a huge challenge, where I will have the opportunity to use my experiences as a contest rider, in a unknown, exciting and natural element. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to go into a season with a beginners mind, where creativity, curiosity and spontaneity are key players. It is not often we get to do that, as when we practice something and get better at it, our mindsets tend to become more single tracked and maybe dominated by routines and predictability.

As a competitor on the Freeride World Tour I am guaranteed a spot in the three first events in Andorra, Chamonix and Fieberbrunn. If I perform well I will qualify for the season finales in Alaska and Verbier!

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who continuously is supporting me on my journey... everyone from sponsors and colleagues to friends and to strangers who has become friends along the way. I am so excited to embark on another adventure of a season, filled with "first" (as in I have never done before) and fun!

OSLO, NORWAY: «I’m so excited to make the cut of eight women to compete on the Freeride World Tour this season. I wanted to challenge myself in a different element, outside of the park», says Kjersti. «Snowboarding is all about exploring potential and creativity, something I belive this terrain will provide».

Thus Buaas will challenge herself on some of the most difficult faces in the world this winter. The 33 year old, however, has no plans of letting go of the park just yet. She will also be competing in the biggest slopestyle and big air events this season.

«This is huge. Kjersti is a candidate to win X Games with her frontside 1080, and will at the same time be taking on the gnarliest freeride competitions in the world. This is unique», commented Per Iver Grimsrud, national team coach. «She handled the transition from halfpipe to slopestyle and now it will be interesting to see how she handles the transition to freeriding To compete in both the freestlye and freeride world tour simultaneously has to our knowledge, not been done before.»

«It has always been attracting to me to compete because I give it all when the pressure is on», said Buaas. «This is a huge challenge, where I will have the opportunity to use my experiences as a contest rider, in a unknown, exciting and natural element»

Buaas has been a member of the Norwegian National team for 17 years, competed in four Olympics and won arguably the most progressive contest last year, Nine Queens. She was also awarded as female rider of the year at the Norwegian Snowboard Awards earlier this month. As a competitor on the Freeride World Tour Buaas win be guaranteed a place in Andorra, Chamonix and Fieberbrunn. If she performs well she will also qualify for the season finale. First in Alaska. If that goes well she will stare down the frightening face of Bec de Rosses in Verbier at the final day of the season.

This is what’s in store for Kjersti on the Freeride World Tour

Awarded Norwegian Snowboarder Of The Year

@nineknights / Klaus Polzer

Last week I won the award for "rider of the year" in Norway at snowboard awards! I was also nominated for "rider of the decade" with amazing riders like Andreas Wiig, Mikkel Bang, Mads Johnson & Danny Larsen - Andreas ended up winning the award, well deserved! Thank you to all of you who voted for me - it means a lot!!! When you work hard for something it feels good to be gifted appreciation from others around you. Yet, more importantly is what snowboarding and being out in nature constantly keep reminding me: humbleness is key! After all we are not here on earth to see how important we can be, but to see how much difference we can make in the life's of others.

Red Carpet for a good cause

We had so much fun getting dolled up in beautiful dresses and creative hairstyles for the @womenssportsfoundation event in ‪#‎newyork‬ last night. But more importantly, we all feel so blessed to be a part of this great celebration and movement, founded by the legendary Billy Jean King.

“Forty-one years ago we founded an organization to recognize the accomplishments of the world's greatest women athletes just like we are doing here at tonight's Salute,” said WSF Founder Billie Jean King. “We have seen great momentum and breakthroughs this past year for female athletes, coaches and commentators and we came together tonight to celebrate those moments, and to commemorate the impact the Foundation has on women and girls each and every day”

Thank you to everyone who came to the event, donations to the foundation and to people spreading the word to help create more awareness and opportunities for women in sports! And thank you @freepeople for the amazing dress I got to wear walking down the red carpet for a great cause!

PREVENTION IS THE CURE

Supporting non profits who care to make a difference is one of my love to do's! Keep A Breast Foundation does so much work to help prevent (mark PREVENT) breast cancer. There is so much research out there showing that our lifestyle choices are directly linked to disease. Did you know that cosmetics like our makeup, soaps and shampoos often contain harmful chemicals that literally will attack our cells and cause cancer? Besides skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among American women according to http://www.keep-a-breast.org/get-educated/cancer-facts/. It accounts for nearly 1 in 3 cases of cancers. Today, about 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.

When I visit the Keep A Breast Foundation I always learn I lot of freaky facts about cancer, one of them being that they have actually found remains of parabens in the lumps!!! There are many different parabens out there, the most harmful ones known are methylparaben & propylparaben so look out for these on the labels. According to http://www.breastcancer.org/ many of these chemicals are considered hormone disruptors. Hormone disruptors can affect how estrogen and other hormones act in the body, by blocking them or mimicking them, which throws off the body's hormonal balance. Because estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer develop and grow, many women choose to limit their exposure to these chemicals that can act like estrogen.

Keep A Breast states that every woman can decrease her risk of breast cancer by living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding common toxins that are linked to cancer, and making smart diet choices.

So especially ladies, be mindful about the products you put on your body, including lotions, sunscreens, deodorants, nail polishes, makeup. I bet you will find at least one those no-no parabens hidden in the forest of ingredients of your cosmetics.

Find out more about what cosmetics are "safe" and not on http://www.safecosmetics.org

Make your workouts fun!

To me physical activity plays a big role in our overall health & happiness. I make sure I do at least one training session a day. Some days when I feel like I "don't have time" to train, I try make my training more creative & fun. I always come back with a bigger smile on my face than before I worked out, because when we use our bodies, we release endorphins. Here is a fun little yoga strength / balance sequence from a hiking trip in YOSEMITE national park. It's a core focused practice that you should ease yourself into, shall you attempt on trying at home :) Happy training!
